about

‘City’ is the first single from Perth based singer songwriter Joel Barker’s forthcoming album ‘Beyond the Crows’.

The song documents Barker’s conversations with a woman of African decent living in East London who had lost her husband and because of this felt a greater attachment to an inherited place. The song explores the idea that a place acts as a trigger for emotions and memories, and can act as a bonding agent to a specific location.

In 2013, Barker moved to England for 6 months to write and record a full length album. The result of this is a stunning collection of songs which focus on ‘the middle’. The album ‘Beyond the Crows’ explores the in between space of relationships with people, memories, land and places.

Recorded at Café Music Studios in East London, home to Mercury Prize nominated artist Jon Hopkins, ‘Beyond the Crows’ was recorded over the space of 20 days by producer and engineer Cherif Hashizume. In the heart of winter, in the darkness of London, Barker’s exquisite songs were given life.

Accompanying Barker’s delicate and honest vocal is Emily Barker, Joel’s BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winner sister. Emily’s equally stunning vocal reinforces the sentiment of the song, and of family.

Matt Park from English indie rock band The Mystery Jets lends a hand on the dobro guitar to help give the song a ‘Tarantino meets tumbleweed’ flavour.

Rob Pemberton and Lachlan McLellan from UK based up and coming indie rock band Hot Feet provide the rhythm section, with Gill Sandell and Nicholas Malcom playing the accordion and trumpet respectively.

Grammy Awarding winning engineer William Bowden, best known for his work with Goyte and his hit song ‘Somebody that I Used to Know’, has mastered the album in its entirety.

‘Beyond the Crows’ will be released nationally and internationally in October 2014.

SONG LYRICS

Catching, catching the bus to Rosemary Avenue
For a record and a smile
It’s raining, its raining like gunfire
Its still everyday Ill tread the concrete mile

I’ll never stray from here

It’s changing, the faces on buildings
Im getting the feeling this trouble is just a tide
Sun comes, touches the windows, blushes the widow
Returns him to her side

They’ll never stray from here

Cold, I have iron feet
Warming in loves retreat
Did you hear the sparrow sing
Ill never stray from here?

Needing, needing my lover. Follow the river
And tempt her to my side
I’m walking, walking on litter. I’m scattered and bitter
She’s heavy on my mind.

I’ll never stray from here.

Cold, I have iron feet
Warming in loves retreat
Did you hear the sparrow sing
Ill never stray from here?
